When the Sparkle Comes Down

Oh, where do I start…

The bows come down. The shelves clear. And a quieter kind of beauty begins to take root.

The Reset

Every January, after the holidays are packed away, I feel a strong pull toward an intentional reset at home. The bows come down, the greenery is gathered up, and the shelves, mantle, tabletops, and cozy corners get wiped clean — a fresh start in the simplest sense.

There’s something restorative about empty space after a season of sparkle. A clear surface feels like a quiet exhale. After the visual fullness of late fall and early winter, I think our minds crave calm — fewer decisions, softer surroundings, room to notice light again. The house feels peaceful, and honestly, so do I.

Shopping the Basement

I usually let this “blank-slate season” linger for a few weeks. Then creativity starts to tap me on the shoulder. I wander down to my basement — lined with practical wire shelving that holds years of thrifted treasures and favorite pieces — ready to shop my own collection and play with new combinations. Rearranging familiar things always feels a little like rediscovering myself.

The Green Return

My spider plant greets me with cheerful little offshoots, like it’s been busy while I wasn’t looking.

My tradescantia spills over its pot with dramatic purple stripes, completely unbothered by time apart.

My African violet sits low and steady, soft leaves reminding me to slow down too.

My Christmas cactus quietly holds its shape, dependable as ever.

My heartleaf philodendron stretches toward the winter light, filling corners with gentle life.

And the amaryllis bulbs — always my winter miracle — remind me how beautiful it is when growth follows rest.

Maybe that’s what January is for: not becoming something new but tending to what was quietly growing all along.
